As Americans, we understand the need to be both equal and equitable. As such my argument isn’t with the results of testing. It’s with the underlying question that, despite the necessity for balance in both equality and equity, are teachers at least being honest?
And the saddest part? Had it been more for his life, had he valued his life in the way the cops valued theirs, had he been more afraid of dying than going to jail, he could’ve at least fought for the thing the cops were worried they’d lose when killing him.
I remember my first year of teaching in a New Orleans charter. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat remembering it. The hours of planning and the papers that were piling up. The parent-teacher conferences. The IEPs, IAPs, BIPs, PGPs. It still gives me the goddamn willies.
